Sensory Exploration

Explore the little things around you

What are we going to do in this activity?

Let’s go on a sensory adventure! This activity is all about exploring different textures, smells, and sounds using items from around your home.

It’s a fun way to focus your senses and discover what feels calming or exciting to you. Everyone’s preferences are different, so take your time to enjoy the experience in your own way.

Before we start

Collect Some Items

Gather a mix of things with interesting textures, scents, or sounds (e.g., rice, soft fabrics, scented candles, or musical toys).

Set up a comfortable space

Use a table or soft area like a blanket to lay out your items.

Lets get started

1

Start with touch

Pick up one item and feel it with your hands.

Is it rough, smooth, soft, or bumpy?

Close your eyes to focus on the texture.

2

Explore smells

If you have scented items, like candles or spices, take a gentle sniff.

What does the smell remind you of?

3

Listen closely

Shake, tap, or rub items that make sounds (like a jar of rice or crinkly paper).

Notice how loud or soft the sounds are.

4

Mix and Match

Combine two senses—listen to the sound of an item while touching it or notice how a smell makes you feel.

5

Pick your favourites

Choose the items or sensations that made you feel the happiest or calmest.

You did it !

Remember, take your time with each step and repeat the activity with new items

Challenge time

If you’ve completed this activity, and would like to challenge yourself further, you could

  • Create your own sensory box by gathering more items you love and keeping them in a special place.

  • Try exploring new sensations, like warm water, ice cubes, or a soft brush.

  • Share your favourite sensory item with a family member or friend and explain why you like it.

Which item did you enjoy the most, and why?
Was there a texture, smell, or sound that surprised you?
How did this activity make you feel—calm, excited, or something else?
